Abstract
The evolution of automotive engines has led to the introduction of electronic control systems, capable of optimizing engine performance to improve fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. Theoretical models play an important role in the design of engine control and diagnostic systems, allowing a reductionin development time and costs. The paper describes the development of a control-oriented submodels library for engine components and subsystems. Library blocks were assembled together to build a mean value engine model (MVEM) for the simulation of a diesel engine, fitted with a common rail injection system, waste-gated turbine and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). Simulation results were compared with experimental data, both in steady and transient conditions. The model satisfactorily estimated engine behaviour with very short calculation times.
