Abstract

This article considers the impact of translation on the transmission of collective memory through a comparative study of the original French and translated English audio guides at the Centre de la Mémoire at Oradour-sur-Glane, a village whose inhabitants were massacred by the Waffen-SS in 1944. Framed by Landsberg's notion of ‘prosthetic memory’, it explores the capacity of translation to shape the affective and ethical response of the English audio guide user, thereby orienting the visitor along the Centre's route of remembrance in a manner which may converge with or deviate from the experience of the French visitor.
