Abstract

The viaduct carrying the first section of the £5·2 billion Channel Tunnel Rail Link over the River Medway near Rochester is a uniquely styled bridge. The 1·25 km long, 25-span prestressed concrete box girder has become a symbol for the new railway and the 152 m main span has extended the limit for high-speed train crossings. This paper reports on its design and construction, which used both balanced cantilever and push-launched techniques. The viaduct was awarded the Concrete Society Award for Civil Engineering in 2002.
