Abstract
A challenge faced by French as a second language (FSL) teachers is how to maintain and improve their language ski11s, their pedagogical knowledge. and their understanding of francophone culture. This article explains why it is difficult for FSL teachers to achieve this goal, and looks at how pervasive the problem is. It suggests how teachers could be assisted in their efforts to improve their skills and knowledge, and appeals to all provinces to share information on the inservicing available to their FSL teachers so that a master list of upgrading courses could be created and distributed to FSL teachers across Canada.
