Abstract
During freezing of alloys the difference in densities between the solid and the liquid results in a mass flow throughout the solid-liquid region. This mass flow contributes to transport of mass and heat and hence affects the rate of solidification of the alloy. In this paper an analytical solution is presented on solidification of a semi-infinite slab of a binary alloy at a constant surface temperature and unequal solid and liquid densities. On the basis of an assumed form of the solid fraction distribution within the solid-liquid region, this solution yields the temperature and liquid velocity distribution within the solid-liquid region, the temperature distribution within the solid skin and the rates of propagation of the solidus and the liquidas fronts. A comparison is made with the case of equal solid and liquid densities.
