Abstract

The recently completed Penang Second Bridge in Malaysia is one of the longest structures in South East Asia consisting of approximately 22 km of elevated viaduct, 17 km of this over the sea. This paper outlines the initial planning of the project, its design and construction. The bearings for the structure consist of high damping rubber bearings (HDRBs) for seismic isolation. This paper presents the seismic issues associated with the project and describes the development of the bridge design and the reasons for the choice of HDRBs. The results of the extensive testing are presented and the construction and installation method outlined. A simplification to Malaysian seismic design based on work from this and other projects is also presented.
