Abstract
This briefing addresses a situation where faulty roadworks gave trouble with house cracking occurring. The observed levels of peak particle velocity did not appear to be high enough to meet the critical damage levels specified in BS 7385 so further checks were made. It was found that with standard equipment the measurements of short pulses were in error and that very short pulses gave much higher damage levels than normal ground-borne vibrations. This allowed utility companies to escape liability for damage. BS 7385 should be modified.
