The Role of Local Transition Councils in Rural Communities

Abstract

The authors of this article present the role of a rural community transition council. They believe that the feasibility of developing a local transition council in a rural community depends upon an understanding of the context of rural communities and knowledge of the purpose and nature of transition councils. A rural transition council is feasible if there is commitment from all local stakeholders as to the mission or expected outcomes of the council and an understanding of the activities necessary to achieve them. Specific suggestions are provided on improving community cohesiveness and improving community capacity to develop and maintain transition services to youths with disabilities.
