Abstract
This article deals with a number of the issues raised in the current debate over the status and nature of theory and research in educational administration. In particular, current corrtroversies and how these relate to similar debates within the philosophy and sociology of science. and ideas from the New Sociology of Education which allow an understanding of the importance of educational administration in the management of knowl edge, are discussed.
