The Systematic Cutting and Stretch-Breaking of Disoriented Slivers

Abstract

Models are presented of the systematic cutting and stretch-breaking of slivers in which the fibers arc considered to be straight but angled to the sliver axis. The efliciency with which cutting and breaking will shorten the longer fibers in the sliver is discussed. Cutting becomes more competitive than breaking when the fibers are highly misaligned. By increasing the draft, the efficiency of the breaker is improved. The production of short fiber by each technique is considered, and a simple experiment shows that the relative effectiveness of stretch breaking increases substantially with alignment.
