Abstract
Polyester/cotton yarns sized with different quantities of polyvinyl alcohol were subjected to pneumatic and microscopic measurements to quantify hairiness before and after flexabrasion. For the nonabraded sized yams, overall cross-sectional areas, core areas, and hairiness all tended to decrease with increased size content. As a re sult of abrasion, the core area tended to return to that of the nonsized yarn. Hairi ness tended to decrease during the earlier cycles of abrasion, after which it increased. Although hairiness and its rate of development with flexabrasion decreased with in creased size content, differences at greater than 10% size add-on were small. Follow ing a few preliminary comparisons between pneumatic and microscopic measure ments, a method was found to quantify changes in hairiness based on pneumatic measurements alone.
