Effect of Thermal Aging on High Temperature Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior in AISI 304 Stainless Steel

Abstract

To investigate the effect of thermal aging on the high temperature fatigue life, low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were carried out for type 304 stainless steel specimens with two different heat-treatment conditions (solutionized specimens and solutionized- aged specimens) at the high temperature of 873 K. For the continuous LCF tests, the life of the aged specimen is nearly the same as that of the solutionized one. Under creep- fatigue cycling, however, the fatigue life of the aged specimens is longer than that of the solutionized ones. The thermal aging effect is discussed in terms of the creep damage under high temperature creep-fatigue cycling.
