Analyzing Resonant Response of a System with Dry Friction Damper Using an Analytical Method

Abstract

This paper presents an analytical method for determining the steady state response of a system with dry friction damper. A complete stick-slip cycle of the damper is divided into four intervals in succession; during each interval the system vibration is linear and can be determined using an analytical solution form. Combining these solutions forms an analytical solution of periodic motion of the system. Numerical simulation shows that there are two response peaks, with the jump down and up phenomena, in passage through the resonant frequencies of the system when free of the friction damper and when the friction damper is completely stuck, respectively. The amplitude of one peak can be reduced up to 90% by adjusting the value of normal force between the damper's contacting surfaces. Whereas to determine the optimum frictional contact, the reduction of two peak amplitudes of response should be considered together.
