Abstract
Tests were conducted to validate the model and the CHAR computer code previously developed for calculating the thermomechanical behavior of carbon-phenolic and carbon-carbon composites exposed to high temperatures. Temperature distributions in and damage of rapidly heated carbon-phenolic composites were measured. The data com pared well to the results calculated by the code. Parametric studies were also performed, the results of which yield physical insights into the ply-lift phenomenon observed in solid rocket motor exit cone linings, and provide a guide in the design of parts made of carbon- phenolic and carbon-carbon composites.
