Abstract
We believe it is time to develop a code of ethics as an important step in establishing interdisciplinary identity and credibility for adult education. The first section of this paper outlines five basic principles which could serve as a common ground for all adult educators: social responsibility as the most important principle, an inclusive philosophy of education for a foundation, pluralism as a strength but greater unity a worthy goal, respect for learners, and educators. As part of this discussion, we answer objections from those who question the wisdom of developing a code.
