Abstract
The Learning Enrichment Service (LES) and the Mentor Academy Program (MAP) establish a different perspective from which to view the education of the gifted adolescent. LES and MAP place emphasis on the process of learning and focus on the resources required to encourage the transition from teacher directed learning to teacher and student co-directed learning. ( The Gifted Learner, 1984). In such a learning partnership, the gifted adolescent is recognized as an equal partner in the initiation, planning, implementation and evaluation of the learning experience. (Runions and Smyth, 1985). This co-learning partnership evolves through the student developing the skills necessary to assume more responsibility for his/her learning.
