Abstract
Patient educators need an approach to patient education that balances the constraints of time and expertise with the most effective approaches to behavior change. The stepped approach to patient education involves three steps: (1) use of interpersonal skills, (2) teaching, and (3) overcoming obstacles to behavior change. This paper provides techniques and examples of how to implement the stepped approach to diabetes care.
