Abstract

The full equations of motion of the valvetrain of an internal combustion engine formulated by finite element techniques are solved by imposing the contact conditions. Velocity and acceleration constraints as well as displacement constraints are imposed on the contact points by an iterative scheme similar to the augmented Lagrangian multiplier method for stability of the solution. The valve spring is also modelled by employing rod elements, and surging with the coil collisions is computed by the contact conditions.
