Abstract
On the basis of response frequencies, 68 MMPI items significantly differentiated in each of two analyses between 60 National Merit Semi-finalists and 60 college freshman women. Inspection of the 68 items suggests two general types of items—those showing an emphasis on intellectual pursuit and those involving a denial of any worries or difficulties. Maturational differences and different conditions of test administration may have produced some of the differences in response frequencies between criterion and comparison Ss. Nevertheless, there is a definite indication that high scholastic potential of women can be predicted from a scale consisting of personality inventory items.
