Factor Structure of the Woodcock-Johnson Cognitive Subtests from Preschool to Adulthood

Abstract

The Woodcock-Johnson Cognitive Battery was factor analyzed from the preschool ages through adulthood to extend the work of McGrew, who studied a variety of solutions for grades 1 through 12. Using data from the Woodcock-Johnson stanardization sample, results of empirical and subjective criteria indicated that there is only one meaningful factor at the preschool ages, but that there are three significant factors from grades 1 through 12 and ages 20-65 +: Verbal Ability, Perceptual Speed, and Reasoning. Loadings on the general (g) factor tended to increase through adulthood. Some developmental trends emerged, and clinical implications of the findings are stressed.
