Technology-Focused Expansive Professionals: Developing Continuous Learning in the High-Technology Sector

Abstract

This article outlines a conceptual model to explain the focus and development of expansive behavior. Key indicators of expansiveness are high self-directed energy, motivation for continuous learning, and an action/applied orientation. Particular attention is given to technology-focused expansive professionals who show continued involvement in knowledge acquisition, discovery, and invention. Emerging technologies impose fast-paced, competitive, global pressures that demand and energize technology-focused expansiveness. However, as technologies stabilize, learning more about oneself and how one relates to others (self-awareness-focused expansiveness) may be important for continuous learning and business success. Human resource challenges for managing technology-focused expansive professionals, creating suitable business cultures, and developing the self-awareness necessitated by business maturity are discussed.
