Preparation of silica-filled water-based acrylic nanocomposite paints with improved scratch resistance

Abstract

Nanosilica-filled water-based acrylic nanocomposites with varying monomer ratio and nanosilica content were prepared by emulsion polymerization. The resulting resins were coated on ceramic, steel, and glass substrates and the scratch resistances were measured. The relationship between the scratch resistance and the composition was observed to be influenced by the nanosilica concentration, adhesion strength to substrate, monomer ratio, and the glass transition temperature of the coating. The highest scratch resistances were obtained when a 0.46 mole percent methyl methacrylate and a 6.2 weight percent (wt%) nanosilica were used.
