Social skills training in librarianship

Abstract

Public librarianship is a service profession which involves its members in a considerable amount of face-to-face contact with the general public. As in any people-directed profession, the importance of interpersonal skills cannot be overstated. This article discusses why social skills training is so relevant to contemporary librarianship, considers the educational implications, and outlines the elements of a social skills training package for librarians.
