1. Recently, such sparse matrix solvers used in conjunction with Newton's method have been used to solve a diverse number of fluid flow problems. Vanka (Ref. 1) has used such a method on combustion problems and Wigton (Ref. 2) has applied it for transonic flows. The authors (Ref.3) have applied direct solvers in the solution of high Reynolds number laminar flows to investigate massive separation. Hafez et a1 (Refs. 12 - 14) have used direct solvers and Newton's method for viscous flows and transonic inviscid flows.
