Abstract
Joining: Understanding the Basics is an introductory guide to industrial joining technology and its application to engineering materials and assemblies. It begins with an overview on joint design and the factors to be considered when selecting a joining method. It includes chapters on arc welding, resistance welding, and related (fusion) welding processes as well as brazing and soldering, mechanical fastening, and adhesive bonding. It discusses some of the more important metallurgical effects of fusion welding, including heat flow, weld pool solidification, solid-state transformations, residual stresses and distortion, discontinuities, and fatigue. It also covers solid-state welding processes and addresses challenges such as joining dissimilar metals, plastics, ceramics, and composites and forming glass-to-metal seals.
