Abstract
Abstract
Without clinical research on pediatric illnesses and medical interventions, children might receive dangerous or ineffective treatments. Yet society also has an obligation to protect children from excessive risks and foster their development, which could be threatened by enrolling them in research studies. Guidelines for pediatric research are needed to balance these aims, taking into account the fact that most children are not able to give informed consent.
