Abstract The preliminary information brochure for the Colston International Sentencing Symposium set out very succinctly some key features of the context in which the Symposium was held: All of the factors listed in this quotation have been influential, to a greater or lesser extent, in most Western countries at some point during the last three decades. However, as the various national case-studies prepared for the Colston Symposium very well illustrate, the details of the response, in terms of sentencing policy, have been quite varied.
