UNSTRUCTURED
The behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are common among older adults with dementia living in nursing homes (NHs). Due to their complex etiopathogenesis and the variability of symptom expression, BPSD are a daily challenge for nurses and NHs professionals. Effective management of the BPSD requires intensive observation and specialised care, particularly by nurses. However, worldwide, healthcare sectors face shortages in nursing staff and other human resources. Faced with these challenges, integrating artificial intelligence-based (AI-based) technologies could be a key strategy to explore in nurses’ daily practice. Despite significant recent interest in the topic, little information is available on integrating AI-based technologies to support nurses striving to detect early BPSD. This opinion piece provides an overview of the available literature on integrating AI into nursing practice and the prospects for its application in the prodromal detection of BPSD.
