Explaining What Counselling Psychology is and What it Can Offer to GPs in Primary Health Care Settings

Abstract

There is a growing interest in developing counselling services in general practice throughout Britain. More and more surgeries employ counsellors as part of their primary health care teams. Unfortunately, little effort has been made to identify the skills, qualifications and training needed to provide a good counselling service. It will be argued that counselling psychology is a profession well suited to meet the psychological needs emerging in general practice.
