Abstract

Topology optimisation techniques are used to automate the design of the reinforcement layouts of the D-regions of reinforced concrete (RC). An integrated elements model with genetic evolutionary structural optimisation (GESO) can be used to derive an optimal strut-and-tie model (STM) from an initial ground structure defined for a general concrete member. However, many problems still exist, such as the transformation of the calculated results into STMs, centralised reinforcement layouts and so on. This study proposes a modified GESO method, specifically a separated elements model GESO, for the design of RC D-regions. This model improves the precision of calculation and targets the object of optimisation. Intuitive reinforcement layout results can be obtained and used to significantly reduce the work of transformation. The numerical examples are optimised to verify the stability and feasibility of the new method. One of the examples is combined with the previous test results to examine the load transfer path. To demonstrate the superiority of the new method, it is compared to three existing methods in terms of steel consumption.
