Abstract

The article tackles problems related to evaluation of research in contemporary Russian. Two types of evaluation are under review – a vertical one and a horizontal one. The first type is effected by higher management of science including state regulatory bodies. The second type is implemented by scientists themselves. New practices of evaluation that had been used in Russia prior to the reforms are now being transformed by the demands of the state to abide by evaluation norms adopted in developed countries. The merger of two types – vertical and horizontal gives birth to specific types of regulation and self-regulation. These new types are affected by the state in which Russian science finds itself, by the practices of its reproduction and limits posed by inadequate financing.
