Abstract

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) can cause a range of diseases. Although there is a robust pneumococcal vaccination program that reduces invasive pneumococcal disease by targeting various polysaccharide capsules, there has been an increase in the isolation of nonvaccine serotypes and nonencapsulated S. pneumoniae (NESp) strains.
