2. In the historical introduction of Ref. 1 an incorrect statement concerning the refutation by Riess et al.3 of Rebane’s4 proof that closed shell molecules are diamagnetic has been made. In fact, Rebane4 has only claimed that the ground state of a one‐electron system is diamagnetic. He has pointed out himself that his argument becomes invalid if the unperturbed wave function has nodal surfaces, and that it does not exclude the possibility of a van Vleck paramagnetism for many electron molecules. Riess et al.3 have derived a mathematically correct variation principle for the phase of a many‐electron wave function and have shown that Rebane’s treatment is valid only in special cases.
