AbstractRadiation exposure of humans can lead to a dose-dependent, severe and usually fatal illness known as Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS). Radiation countermeasures have been established but a non-toxic radioprotectant against ARS will still be of significant value. Genistein is a plant-derived isoflavone that has been proven to have antioxidant properties and has been associated with radioprotective activities. In this chapter, experimental studies on the ability of genistein to prevent radiation-induced mortality in mice are presented. Its toxicity and appropriate route of administration are also investigated.
