AbstractThis chapter examines staff recruitment and retention in the leisure and business events sectors. Although both areas deal with events, the two are quite different, with the business event environment being very similar to that of 'normal' organizations in structure, while leisure events tend to be 'pulsating events'. It is argued that it is difficult to generalize about recruitment and retention events industry, as the issues relate to whether it is a business or leisure event. For those parts of the events industry that are similar to 'normal' organizations, such as jobs in convention centres or visitors' bureaus, strategies to recruit and retain staff focus on providing a good working environment, sound supervision, reasonable pay and reasonable workloads. For those working in leisure events and the facilitation of business events, however, it is important to offer flexible working arrangements, supportive supervision and peers, and the opportunity to take leave for emotional and physical well-being. Finally, it is important that, in any of these positions, staff enjoy their jobs, as the role that job satisfaction has in retaining staff cannot be overestimated.
