Abstract

Here we show that rewarding participants’ performance during dual force field adaptation primarily affects the initial rate of learning and the early timescales of adaptation, with little effect on the final adaptation level. However, reward affects both explicit and implicit components of adaptation. Whereas the learning rate of the slow process is increased implicitly, the fast learning and retention rates are increased through both implicit components and the use of explicit strategies.
