Abstract
Abstract
The appearance of metal aggregates in the crystal structures of MB2, MB4 and MB6 borides is discussed in relation to other compounds showing saturated valences. A comparison with cluster-forming compounds and with Zintl phases, indicates that conceptual barriers, which separate different kinds of inorganic compounds, can be overcome. Clusters are found in fully ionic compounds and examples are given (MgB4) where metals behave structurally as if they were Zintl anions. Partial redox processes between metals and non-metals could account for some of the reported features.
