Induction of lignin solubility for a series of polar ionic liquids by the addition of a small amount of water

Abstract
As the water concentration increases, the proton accepting ability of polar ionic liquids decreases but the proton donating ability increases. This is the reason why some ionic liquids, that have no lignin dissolution ability, gain the lignin dissolution ability by the addition of a suitable amount of water.
