Jordan Fenlon and Erin Wilkinson’s (2015) chapter “Sign Languages in the World” provides a really accessible description of sign languages 135internationally and the types of communities in which they exist, with plenty of examples. They explain how and why some sign languages are closely related and others are very distinct from each other. The chapter also provides historical information about Deaf education and how this has impacted the development of sign languages and discusses multilingualism (using two or more languages) in Deaf communities.
