The absorption spectra of some naphthalene derivatives in vapour and solution

Abstract

Having examined the absorption spectra of naphthalene and its methyl derivatives, I have continued the investigation in order to see how the spectrum of naphthalene is affected by the introduction of different groups in the alpha and beta positions. The technique employed for the solution and vapour spectra has been fully described elsewhere. Pure hexane§ was used as a solvent unless otherwise stated, ϵ is the molecular absorption coefficient. The substances were purified by crystallisation from hexane. Liquids were fractionally distilled in vacuo .
