On the method of Hermitian forms and its application to some problems of hydrodynamic stability

Abstract

A method of bilinear forms for ordinary linear homogeneous differential equations is described where constraints upon eigenvalues may be obtained. Application is made to some well-known problems of hydrodynamic stability, leading to both familiar and new results, in particular for some two dimensional shearing flows and also for some viscous swirling flows.
