Restrictions upon instabilities of plane and helical gas flows

Abstract

A refinement of Howard’s semicircle theorem for plane flows is presented in which a merging with Miles’s theorem occurs. Also a restriction upon the unstable modes of a wide class of helical gas flows is given. In some cases the bound is exact, while it reduces to Howard’s theorem in several instances. Many partially overlapping variations of the result are possible.
