Abstract
Using a linearized theory we investigate the flow at the stern of a two-dimensional ship. The ship is assumed to be infinitely long in the upstream direction. A method for the location of the point of separation is described. An explicit expression is derived for the amplitude and phase of the wave in the wake. Then, conditions on the shape of a stern which leaves no wave in the wake are given. Some of the results may be applicable to bow-flow as well.
