Abstract
An assignment is described here in which students undertake both theoretical and experimental analyses of the vibrations of a simple cantilever. A variety of techniques is used, and all of the results are compared. Students are thereby exposed to several features of practical value in the analysis of vibration for design purposes. These include the use of computer-based equipment for experimental data acquisition and analysis, and the value of approximate prediction techniques.
