Abstract
The predicted heat transfer behaviour of two coals, one from the northern hemisphere and the other a high-ash southern hemisphere coal, are compared. The comparisons are effected in a hypothetical cylindrical combustor 2 m in diameter and in a hypothetical power station combustor. An assessment of the performance of the prediction procedure is made by comparisons with data for a cylindrical combustor. The southern hemisphere coal performs markedly less well because the lower flame temperatures consequent of the additional ash burden reduce the heat transfer by more than it is augmented by the associated increase in the absorption coefficients.
