Abstract

The current paper presents an extensive study aimed at trochoidal-gear pumps. In recent years their important application in the automotive industry, where trochoidal-gear pumps are increasingly in use, has encouraged work to enhance a better understanding of their characteristics and performance. To different extents, geometry and kinematics of trochoidal profiles and volumetric characteristics are considered. The bond graph technique is applied to model a trochoidal-gear pump based upon an ideal representation in order to simulate the instantaneous flow. The frequent intricate aspects of leakage have been deliberately left aside in this part 1 of the present paper. Nevertheless, leakage and interaction of the flow inside the pump will be presented in part 2 of this paper. The experimental determination of the flow ripple of a crankshaft-mounted gerotor pump for IC engine lubrication is also considered. A convenient method of experimentally measuring the so-called ‘secondary source’ method is presented. The method is based on the analysis of the wave propagation characteristics in a circuit which includes the pump under test and an additional source of fluid-borne noise. In addition to allowing investigation of the flow characteristics through simulation and experimental measurement, which obtains interesting results, this study also provides a way of obtaining the dynamic properties of trochoidal-gear pumps under realistic conditions for use in further studies for modelling more complex hydraulic components.
