Abstract
A study has been made of a technique called taper grinding, which offers considerable potential as a test procedure for the rapid acquisition and analysis of grinding output data. On the basis of a comparison of results pertaining to forces, specific energy and workpiece residual stress from taper grinding with those obtained from conventional slot grinding tests on cast iron, it is shown that taper grinding is a robust and efficient method for the analysis of grinding data. Analysis of the taper and slot grinding test results has also shown that equivalent chip thickness and average workpiece temperature are excellent universal parameters for the assessment and prediction of forces and residual stress respectively.
