Abstract
Animation as applied to thematic cartography is conspicuous by its absence. This article explores the reasons for the lack of incorporation of animation into cartography and the future prospects of animation methods. Examples of dynamic information as traditionally portrayed in static maps are reviewed as are some of the pioneering works in animated cartographic sequences. Techniques in computer animation are discussed, and difficulties associated with the dissemination of animated cartography are examined. Future research possibilities for animation are proposed in light of recent cartographic and technological developments such as bivariate choropleth mapping, digital video interactive, multimedia graphics, and scientific visualization.
