Abstract
Washed resting-cell suspensions of Staphylococcus epidermidis produce considerable quantities of rhizopterin-like materials when incubated with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), adenosine triphosphate, MgSO4, and 2-amino-4-hydroxy-6-hydroxymethyldihydropteridine. A number of purine derivatives also stimulate the formation of these same materials, with the combination of inosine and serine proving to be optimal. The stimulation with either the purine or pteridine substrate occurs in two principal products, one identified as rhizopterin and the other a labile material spontaneously forming rhizopterin. The hypothetical formation of these pteroate coenzyme forms in association with the coupling reaction between pteridines and PABA is discussed.
