Abstract
Heating a solution of t-butanol in acidified deuterium oxide under slight pressure has yielded 85% per-deuterated t-butanol. At atmospheric pressure normal isobutylene was produced. Isobutylene could not be hydrated in good yield by this method. A number of related alcohols were resistant to exchange by this method, but one of them, 1-methylcyclohexanol, gave nearly complete dehydration without deuterium incorporation.
